Panoramic walks

Shaded walk along the bisse, pine scents on the slopes, and nature immersion on the Follatères trails. Perfect for families, with open views of the Rhône Valley.

From the hamlet of Loye (Grône), you can easily explore three complementary landscapes: the Bisse de Loye (a historic local irrigation channel with almost flat, shaded sections), the pine-covered slopes offering short loops bathed in evening light, and the Follatères Nature Reserve — one of Valais’ most remarkable natural sites, with its dry steppes and Mediterranean-scented oak groves. A perfect area for refreshing summer walks and gentle hikes year-round.

Recommended routes

Bisse de Loye (easy, 1h30–2h30 depending on section): a gentle trail alternating between forest shade and stone walls, with balcony-like passages overlooking the plain. Ideal for families and all-terrain strollers.
Pinewood loops of Loye (easy/moderate, 1h30–3h): small ridges and clearings, viewpoints over the Rhône, beautifully photogenic in late afternoon.
Follatères Nature Reserve – nature trail (moderate, 2–3h): marked paths through dry grasslands, pubescent oaks and sun-warmed rocks — a true “Southern Valais” atmosphere.

Wildlife & quiet observation

The area is rich in encounters: birds of prey over the slopes, lizards and heat-loving insects in the reserve, marmots and sometimes chamois near wilder edges. Walk slowly, keep your distance, and stay on the trails.

Seasons & best moments

From May/June to October, depending on conditions. Mornings for freshness and clear light; late afternoons for golden tones and photography. In summer, prefer the shaded bisse and pine forests; in early autumn, the reserve displays stunning colors.

Access & practical info

Departures from Loye (Grône) for the bisse and pine loops (village parking). Access to the Follatères Nature Reserve via designated entry points (Fully / Dorénaz). Marked trails; return via the same route possible. Check for any seasonal restrictions in the reserve (habitat protection).

Difficulty & duration

From easy 1h30–2h (bisse or short loops) to moderate 2–3h (Follatères / hillside loops). Gentle elevation; caution near bisse edges and on sun-exposed rocky paths.

Useful tips

Wear grippy shoes, bring water (few fountains), a hat, sun protection and a light windbreaker. Keep dogs leashed near livestock and inside the reserve. Stay on the trails, close gates, and do not pick protected plants.
