Bisse de Vex & Hérens pastures: gentle walk and alpine wildlife

Easy shaded walk along the Bisse de Vex, between forests, mayens, and the alpine pastures of Hérens.

Heritage of water and alpine life

The Bisse de Vex is a historic irrigation channel that runs almost flat through forests and mountain pastures. Ideal in warm weather, it offers long shaded stretches, benches, and regular viewpoints over the valley. Around the villages of Saint-Martin, Suen, and Eison, the rhythm of alpine life sets the tone — Hérens cows, bells, and open huts depending on the season.

Recommended routes (easy → moderate)

Veysonnaz ↔ Mayens de Sion (easy, approx. 3.5–7 km round trip): shaded, almost flat trail — perfect for families and all-terrain strollers.
Mayens de Sion → Planchouet (easy/moderate, up to ~12 km total): follow the bisse along the slope, return the same way or by shuttle depending on the season.
Alpine pasture loop (easy/moderate, 2–4 h): leave the bisse briefly to cross a mountain meadow or mayen, then return to the canal for a gentle finish.

Wildlife & respect

Marmots along the meadows in spring/summer; birds of prey along the slopes. Keep your distance from herds, dogs on leash, and close gates behind you. Stay on the canal path (some narrow sections).

Seasons & best times

From May/June to October depending on conditions. Calm mornings for photography, late afternoons for discreet observation. In summer, the shade of the bisse makes all the difference; in autumn, golden light and fewer visitors.

Access & practical info

Parking at Mayens de Sion, Veysonnaz, and Planchouet. Well-marked trail, gentle profile, optional mayen detours. Bring water, sun hat/windbreaker, salty snacks, and grippy light hiking shoes.
